RESUMO

Three of the main challenges in achieving rapid decarbonization of the electric power sector in the near term are getting to net-zero while maintaining grid reliability and minimizing cost. In this policy analysis, we evaluate the performance of a variety of generation strategies using this "triple objective" including nuclear, renewables with different energy storage options, and carbon-emitting generation with carbon capture and storage (CCS) and direct air capture and storage (DACS) technologies. Given the current U.S. tax credits for carbon sequestration under Section 45Q of the Internal Revenue Code, we find that two options: (1) cofiring bioenergy in existing coal-fired assets equipped with CCS, and (2) coupling existing natural gas combined-cycle plants equipped with CCS and DACS, robustly dominate other generation strategies across many assumptions and uncertainties. As a result, capacity-expansion modelers, planners, and policymakers should consider such combinations of carbon-constrained fossil-fuel and negative emissions technologies, together with modifications of the current national incentives, when designing the pathways to a carbon-free economy.

The purpose of this study was to determine if the amount of subcutaneous tissue over the quadriceps affects the assessment of mean power frequency at the fatigue threshold (MPFFT). It was hypothesized that greater skinfold values will result in lower power outputs associated to the MPFFT. Fourteen adults (Mean ± SD age = 20.7 ± 0.99; body weight = 72.8 ± 12.6 kg) performed an incremental cycle ergometry test to exhaustion while surface electromyographic (EMG) signals were measured from the vastus lateralis. The skinfold thickness of each leg was taken prior to the test, and skinfold thicknesses were separated into a larger and a smaller groups. The independent t-test showed a significant difference (p = 0.01) between the power outputs associated to the MPFFT of groups with high (Mean ± SD 130.4 ± 34.5 W) versus low skinfold (212.5 ± 61.2 W) values. The results suggested that higher subcutaneous fat may have affected the assessment of MPFFT during cycle ergometry.

Direct culture onto four commercial chromogenic media, selective for the isolation of Group B Streptococcus (GBS), were compared with the conventional pre-enrichment Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) method for the ability to isolate GBS from 242 pregnant women's self-collected vaginal/perineal swabs. The sensitivities and specificities for direct culture on to chromogenic agar were 92% and 100% for StrepBSelect (Bio-Rad Laboratories), 96% and 100% for Brilliance GBS (Thermo-Fisher Scientific), 94% and 100% for CHROMagar StrepB (CHROMagar, Dutec Diagnostics), 86% and 100% for ChromID Strepto B (bioMerieux). CDC recommended broth pre-enrichment then culture on blood containing selective agar had a sensitivity and specificity of 90.0% and 100% respectively. The chromogenic agar tested produced comparable results to the pre-enrichment CDC method.

Measured uptake of cyantraniliprole (3-bromo-1-(3-chloro-2-pyridinyl)-N-[4-cyano-2-methyl-6-[(methylamino)carbonyl]phenyl]-1H-pyrazole-5-carboxamide) into tomatoes following hydroponic exposure allowed calibration of a novel soil uptake model. The total mass of plant parts in treated plants was derived from the weights of successively harvested control plants (no cyantraniliprole provided) over 18 days following the first sampling of ripe tomatoes. Transpired water measured during plant growth was coupled with the calculated increase in plant mass to determine a transpiration coefficient constant (L/kg plant fresh weight) for use in the model. Cyantraniliprole concentrations in mature fruit, fresh foliage, and plant uptake solutions were used as the basis for a nonlinear least-squares optimization that consistently resolved to values that were empirically valid compared to metabolism studies in whole plants. This calibrated reference model adequately described uptake from soil pore water into plant fruit, and served as the basis for describing residues in fruit following commercial greenhouse growing conditions.

The kinetics and mechanism(s) of the hydrolytic degradation of a compound are needed to evaluate a compound's abiotic degradation in the environment. In this paper, the hydrolysis of cymoxanil [2-cyano-N-[(ethylamino)carbonyl]-2-(methoxyimino) acetamide] was investigated in dark sterile aqueous solutions under a variety of pH conditions (pH 2.8-9.2) and temperatures (15-50 degrees C). Hydrolysis of cymoxanil was described by first-order kinetics, which was dependent on pH and temperature. Cymoxanil degraded rapidly at pH 9 (half-life = 31 min) and relatively slowly at pH 2.8 (half-life = 722 days). The effect of temperature on the rate of cymoxanil degradation was characterized using the Arrhenius equation with an estimated energy of activation of 117.1 kJ mol(-)(1). An increase in temperature of 10 degrees C resulted in a decrease in half-life by a factor of approximately 5. Three competing degradation pathways are proposed for the hydrolysis of cymoxanil, with two of the pathways accounting for approximately 90% of cymoxanil degradation. These two pathways involved either initial cyclization to 1-ethyldihydro-6-imino-2,3,5(3H)-pyrimidinetrione-5-(O-methyloxime) (1, Figure 1) or direct cleavage of the C-1 amide bond to form cyano(methoxyimino) acetic acid (7). The third pathway of degradation involved initial cyclization to 3-ethyl-4-(methoxyimino)-2,5-dioxo-4-imidazolidinecarbonitrile (8), which rapidly degrades into 1-ethyl-5-(methoxyimino)-2,4-imidazoline-2,4-dione (9). All three pathways eventually lead to the formation of the polar metabolite oxalic acid.
